There's a new convention in town

As if Seattle wasn't jam-packed with enough stuff for gamers to do, an up and coming convention is about to bring some more feminine wiles to the community. Check out GeekGirl Con if you haven't heard of it yet.

Set to premiere next year, it's going to focus on the softer awesomer side of gaming and I hope to snag a vendor spot in the expo hall. But before that can happen, the convention needs funding to run.

To help the show organizers along, I've donated one of my lovely lanyards to auction! It's going on right now, and ends Friday night at 5pm. The lanyard is pictured below - pink, silver and black. It normally retails for $45, and I'd be sad if anyone bid lower than that. Very sad indeed. Step it up! Send bids to sponsor@geekgirlcon.com ASAP if you want it.

PAX Prime 2010 - Lanyard Pickup

We're just days away from the excitement! All current maille commissions are complete, swag bags have been expertly stuffed by the Enforcers, and I have my work schedule for the PA Merch Booth. For you this means I've figured out when I can get these awesome lanyards and dice bags to everyone. So here's the plan:

Location: 3rd Floor Atrium, by the South Escalators
Time: 9am-10:30am (10 on Sunday)

If you haven't yet paid for your stuff, you can do so in cash when you come to pick it up. If these times don't work for you, email me at jules @ knittedsteel . net and we will make other arrangements. I WILL NOT have the lanyards with me while I am on shift at the PA Merch Booth, so please do not come to Merch specifically for Knitted Steel goods.

Enforcers: I will be at setup on Thursday 10am-1pm, likely helping the Merch Booth. Come find me!

As an added bonus to everyone sporting one of my lanyards, I ordered zipper pulls instead of buttons this year. They clip onto any ring with ease! Get one whenever you see me.

The following people have awesome things to pick up:
Amadine
Caesar Maximus
Chaosisorder
Contre
Djiem
Freebsdgirl
Joe L
JonXP
Locke
NABS
Netcrusher
Pinder
PsychoPez
Rabies
Tek
Warthen
Whatzedeuce

WINNERS OF THE PAX PRIME 2010 CONTEST

My esteemed judges and I have come to a decision on this year's contest. Thank you to all who entered!

After a few drinks and some deliberation over which flavor potato chips to eat first, we chose Pepper Jack Cheese. And the contest winners! Some were more creative than others, and some more heartfelt. It all boils down to Shenanigans and bananas.

The Grand Prize Winner is...
BRETT FROM CANADA!
Congrats Brett! You will receive the 3-day pass and Knitted Steel PAX package.

The Glorious Runner Up is...
Mr. Bruining from Holland!
Sadly it's a little late to get that trip in order. Hopefully we will get to see you at PAX this year. For now, you shall get A BANANA.

I will be emailing these winners shortly to get contact/shipping details. To those lucky enough to find a PAX pass, see you there. Everyone else, I hope to see you next year. :)

Cheers!

Please Stand By

Greetings everyone! For the next week I am taking a hard-earned vacation from all types of work. This includes maille.

I will still have intermittent internet access but I'm putting my pliers away and focusing on all things adventurous. Please continue to send in your contest entries - they will still be received and saved for judging!

Here's a little sneak peak at what's coming to my Etsy store post-PAX. Cheers!

CONTEST: Win a PAX Prime 2010 3-Day Prize Package (and banana*)

Knitted Steel is hosting its first ever contest with fabulous prizes!

Did you miss out on getting your 3-Day pass for PAX Prime? Here's your second chance. And with it comes other cool stuff!

One Grand Prize Winner will receive:
- One 3-Day PAX Prime 2010 pass for September 3-5 in Seattle, WA
- One Knitted Steel badge lanyard in PAX Prime colors
- One Knitted Steel hackey sack (you'll need something to do while standing in line), also in PAX Prime colors

One Glorious Runner Up will receive:
- One banana*

So how do you win? That's where it gets a little tricky. This isn't a contest for scalpers; there must be some reason you deserve to get this prize. I want you to tell me why, in your most creative way. It can be through video, poetry, short form fiction, interpretive dance, paintings, sculptures, photography, ANYTHING you can imagine with some restrictions:
- All written entries must be 1000 words or less
- Must be SFW. No naughty bits, excessive bad language, etc.
- All entries must convey, in some manner, why you deserve this pass more than anyone else
- Don't injure anyone or anything. I will not be responsible for your hospital bills.
- You must be at least 13 years old to enter. If you're under 13 and reading this, where are your parents?!
- You must follow Wheaton's Law

DEADLINE: All entries must be received no later than midnight Pacific Time on Friday, August 20th. An esteemed panel of judges will decide the Grand Prize Winner and Glorious Runner Up soon after, and announcements will be made no later than August 27th. Entries will be judged according to creativity, originality and the weather**.

E-mail your entries (or links to them) to jules @ knittedsteel . net by the deadline to be eligible.

By entering, you give me permission to post your entries online for the whole world to see. Your private info will not be sold to third parties. Any entries not following the restrictions listed above will be automatically disqualified and probably made fun of.

* Banana will vary from the one pictured above because I just ate it. One Glorious Runner Up's banana may be real, paper, or even maille. It's a surprise!
** Entries cannot be held responsible for Seattle's unpredictable weather patterns and will thus be awarded equal points.

Update: PAX Saturday Badges are SOLD OUT!

Child's Play 2010 - I Need Your input!

Every year, Child's Play Charity puts on a glamorous dinner and auction to raise money for their cause. It is a wonderful program run by wonderful people, and supported worldwide. I like to go to the dinner every year and bid on the silent auction items, and in 2008 I donated two maille shirts to be auctioned. The shirts were a group effort by the Penny Arcade community - built and funded by great people. I'd like to take on a similar but much smaller project this year.

My inspiration comes from this - The Megaman II Project.
I want to do something like it, but on a much smaller scale. A series of wall hangings roughly the size of MegaMan in the lower left corner. Each one would have a video game sprite, logo, object, or otherwise memorable and game/pop culture-related icon.

So you all, as gamers and nerd culture enthusiasts, I ask you this: If I were to make a series of these, roughly 6"x6", what would you like to see? What would you hang in your home/office? Triforce? 1-up Mushroom? Pac Man? Let me know by commenting on this post. I'll take the top ideas and make them a reality this fall.

Cheers!

I Had Some Spare Rings

So I made a pretty thing! This is made entirely of 16g 1/4" aluminum rings, mostly in 2-in-1 pattern. I built it to fit my lovely model Andi, so I would say it's a small-medium size.

It is completed and for sale! I thought I would offer it up to my lovely readers before putting it on Etsy for a bigger audience. The price is $135 + $5 shipping, but if one of you buys it before July 17th, I'll knock $10 off and the shipping is free!

That's right.
If you buy this by July 17th, the total cost is $125.

After that it will be on Etsy for full price. And speaking of Etsy, I have another negligee top there for the large-XL size ladies out there, seen below.

Perfect for this wonderful summer heat we're getting here. Happy shopping!

That's a Wrap

PAX Prime commissions are officially closed. Email me if you would still like something custom made (I'm always taking more orders!), but you likely won't receive it until after Labor Day weekend.

There is a slim chance I'll have extra lanyards for sale at PAX, but the color and pattern options will be limited. Closer to that weekend I will set up meeting times and places for people to come get their lanyards as well as people interested in picking up the spares. At PAX East I was near the Info Booth, by the queue room and it seemed to work really well. I'll try to find a similar spot at Prime.

Restocking Supplies + A Few Fave Sites

I just ordered materials for the current batch. The next order will be on July 10th, and hopefully TRL has restocked their aluminum supply by then. There is one commission I wasn't able to buy the supplies for, but I am also still waiting on an order of custom anodized scales. Fingers crossed they come in soon!

I also put in some orders for gift bags and boxes from one of my fave supply sites, GemsOnDisplay.com. Fellow crafters and jewelry makers, I highly recommend the site for displays and sales accessories. Their service is fast and awesome, and their products are top notch.

I can easily say the same thing to Moo.com for my minicards. They have excellent photo quality printing and a really simple, readable layout. I never had fun ordering cards before I went to Moo, and I'm not yet taking full advantage of Moo's ability to customize cards.

Next up I need to order some swag for PAX Prime through PureButtons.com. A year or two ago they became the unofficial sponsor of the PAX Button Exchange, and now they give discounts to Enforcers and attendees. Out of an order of 100 there may be one dud button if you're unlucky. This year I want to get some compact Knitted Steel mirrors for my awesome customers but I don't have a solid design yet. Maybe I'll come up with three and make a poll here? Yeah, I will let you decide.

These sites give my business that extra little funky flair that I like to include with every order, and that extra touch of class and professionalism in my photography. I could do it without them, but that would be boring! I highly recommend all three of these sites, should you ever want/need what they have to offer.

Cheers. <3

16 June 2010

Friendly Reminder

If you would like a custom lanyard for PAX Prime, the deadline is July 10th. Let me repeat that in large, friendly letters:

THE DEADLINE FOR LANYARD ORDERS IS
JULY 10TH

Get your order in NOW! You don't have to pay until PAX, but you won't get a lanyard unless you order in time. No exceptions. If I have leftover materials and spare time, I may make extra lanyards for sale in colors and patterns of my choosing. If I were you, I wouldn't wait to find out.

18 May 2010

A quick note on policy

From here on out, all orders requiring standard shipping (a padded envelope via USPS) will carry an extra $3 charge to cover postage and materials. I haven't been very stringent on this until now but I am trying to keep a tighter book with more standardized costs. Larger orders that require other shipment options will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Anyone who is has already paid for their item is square. I am not looking for past reimbursements. :)

Cheers!

25 April 2010

Progress, and Delays

I am shipping a bunch of completed orders tomorrow and waiting to order more materials. Unfortunately TRL is short of stock on the aluminum colors I need, so I am watching the site like a crazy person to get my next batch as soon as possible. I'll update this post as soon as I can order, and then I will be mailling like mad to get everyone their lanyards/neckties/bracelets/various shiny things!

I may also have a large project headed my way. I can't talk about it just yet, but if it goes through I will post pics and info sometime in September. Fingers crossed. ^_^

Cheers all.

UPDATE: Good news! Materials for all current projects have been ordered. The lanyards may look a little different - I ordered saw cut rings for some of the aluminum colors, and TRL is trying a new anodizing method on their black rings. If they just don't look right I will wait until the normal machine cut rings are back in stock. I'm sure they'll be great, however, and you will (hopefully) enjoy the saw cut rings. I'll update again when the shipment arrives. Until then, I will fill as many orders as possible with the supplies I have on hand and spend the rest of my time expanding my Etsy store, which is long overdue for more products.

UPDATE UPDATE: Supplies have arrived! I spent my lunch break today checking and labeling inventory and I'm moving on to play a grueling game of Catch-Up with my commission list. Thank you all for being patient! <3

PAX Prime - Already Gearing Up

PAX East was a huge success! Thank you all so much for making it a wonderful weekend. Now that it's come and gone, it is time to focus on PAX Prime back here in Seattle. I am open for lanyard orders. Same rules as last time, but I am reposting them as a refresher and for those of you who are new to KnittedSteel.

Do you want to look as awesome as this guy? I bet you do. It's easy! With that shining sexy lanyard showing off your 3-day pass to the glorious PAX Prime (or any other weekend of happiness you choose to attend), you can look awesome too.

Ordering is simple! Choose your colors, choose your stripes, contact me with what you want and send the total cost via PayPal or cash!

Step One: Choose your colors.
There is a variety of colors to choose from. For $40 you can have one or two colors. Each additional color is an extra $5. If you want a 3-color lanyard, it's $45, 4-color is $50, etc. These lanyards are made of anodized aluminum. They are brightly colored, durable, lightweight and more often than not have zero negative effects on people with metal allergies. Other metals are available, but often times more costly (contact me for prices), less comfortable and have a tendency to tarnish and leave marks on the skin.

Colors below may vary slightly as I have no control over the anodizing process (think of it like a dye lot). Click on the images for the full size, courtesy TheRingLord.com. The second image is bright (silver) aluminum.

Step Two: Choose your stripes.
The lanyard can be given horizontal or vertical stripes. In the image below, you can see a solid (brass, on the left), vertical stripes (blue & yellow on the right) and horizontal stripes (black, purple and silver in the center). If nothing is specified, I will assume you want vertical stripes. Horizontal stripes will be equally sized unless otherwise requested.

Step Three: Contact Me!
I won't know what you want unless you let me know! To order a lanyard, please email me at jules@knittedsteel.net with the following information:
-- Name & Handle (nickname, gamertag, etc)
-- Your choice of colors and stripes
-- Any other questions or requests
-- Your payment option (paypal or cash)

Step Four: Pay Me Please.
Once I receive your order by email I will reply with your total and arrange payment. You will not receive your lanyard until I receive payment in full, no exceptions! I take PayPal in advance of the convention, or cash in person.

These lanyards are not exclusive to PAX! In fact, they are in no way affiliated except that I'll be there and love the community. If you want a lanyard for another event, let me know! I will ship it to you.

If your lanyard becomes damaged, minor repairs are free. If the clip breaks, if the lanyard becomes entangled on something and pulls apart, if a few rings become scratched, I will fix it!

PLEASE NOTE: If you want to receive a lanyard at or before PAX Prime, the deadline for ordering is July 10th.

"I will write you a lanyard testimonial! i love mine and it looks lovely, holds lots of button and doesn't get caught in my hair! Also it is awesome to fiddle with 8)" ~ Morte Portney via Facebook

PAX EAST LANYARD DELIVERY

It looks like I'll be working 2-10pm daily at the official Merch Booth. Here are some loose times for you to get your lanyards!

THURSDAY: 3-6pm at the Merch Booth setup (ENFORCERS ONLY)
FRIDAY: 8:45-11am in front of the queue room
SATURDAY-SUNDAY: 9-10:30am in front of the queue room

Some Ground Rules For Delivery
-- If you come to the merch booth sometime Friday-Sunday for your lanyard, I won't have it. I'll only be handing these out when I am not working.

-- If the times listed above don't work for you, email me or comment on this post and we will arrange something else ASAP.

-- I am constantly updating the lanyard commission list with my work progress. If you have any questions about the status of your lanyard or if you see an error (say, you paid but your name isn't italicized) please email me or PM me. There is a key to reading the list at the bottom of the blog entry.

-- If you have not paid for your lanyard and do not pick it up by Noon Sunday of PAX East, IT WILL BE PUT UP FOR SALE and you can order another lanyard at a later date.

-- Those who have ordered lanyards past the deadline are on the wait list. I'll do my best to make them in time. So far it's looking good for the wait list! I have this week to do two more lanyards.

-- If your lanyard is already packaged, I can't take pics for you. Sorry. You'll see it in a few days anyway!

-- I will have tools and limited supplies for repairs in Boston. I will NOT have access to Twitter or email beginning this Wednesday night at 10pm Pacific time. If you think you may require a repair sometime during the convention, ask me when you pick up your lanyard and I'll give you my phone number. Please do not come to the merch booth unless you want to buy merch!

Lori Bracelets

I am officially discontinuing Lori bracelets. They served their purpose with amazing success. If you still wish to contribute, please donate to Lupus.org.

If you are still interested in those colors, you are welcome to order them as a normal Pirate band and pay $10.

Thank you all once again for your help!

May I Introduce...

Ladies and Gents, this is Antoinette. She is my new model. I found her on Craigslist for an excellent price and picked her up today before work. I have NO IDEA where I'm going to keep her in my tiny home, except maybe in the cupboard over the fridge.

Since I am not really comfortable modeling all of my own maille clothes, Andi will act as my stunt double. Not only will this work well for photographing my current projects, but I hope she encourages me to make more full shirts and broader accessories that require more than a small necklace bust to work on.

You will also be seeing some significant changes across the KnittedSteel board. I am in the process of rebranding, developing a logo and color scheme, and pulling everything together with a complete theme. This will happen in chunks, but I hope to have everything transitioned by May.

Remember that necklace and earring set from a few posts ago? It is now listed on Etsy. Check it out!

A New Etsy Store - Bunco Boxes

I get a lot of my creativity from my mom. She and my dad have always been a huge influence on me and what I do. My outlet is jewelry, design and layout. Mom's is theme parties and decorations. She is an amazing hostess, and for the past several years she's been a part of an extremely fun Bunco group. When she joined, she introduced them to themed Bunco nights and the group was very quick to adopt the theme scheme into their monthly games. Hers are (as I hear it) far and beyond the most popular because of the effort she puts into each one. Travel, Black & White, and Nautical are all themes that she has explored thoroughly, but after each party she has a box full of supplies and nowhere to put them!

Last month we had an idea. She had heard of Etsy and follows my store and blog closely. (Hi, Mom!) I suggested we open a store selling party theme kits. This week she came up for a visit; she brought up all of the supplies from her Nautical Bunco and I set up my little photo studio. BAM! Bunco Boxes is born. So far she only has one kit for sale, but let me tell you it is amazing. If you play Bunco or you know anyone who does, please pass this on! It is literally a party in a box; all you need is the prizes.

A Very Warm Thank You

This email appeared in my inbox a couple of weeks ago and since it is addressed to everyone, I think this is the right place to forward it:

Thank you.  With the help that everyone has given us, we've managed to stay afloat.  Though the total contributions only paid for a few medical bills, they were giant ones looming over us.  It was just enough that bills could be paid on time (mostly) and we didn't have to spend as much time worrying about our finances - the reduced stress was certainly a factor in my own health and healing.  Even if someone only contributed a dollar, it was still a bridge helping us over the worst chasm we've ever faced.  I, and many of my doctors, can't believe I made it across without losing a limb, quite literally.

Yet here I am - now finally reaching that point where I can start slowly getting off some heavy-hitting medications I no longer need, and am becoming therapeutic on the ones that will be my lifelong companions to ward off these sort of disasters.  I've got my foot!  The toe took a minor hit, but it'll just serve as proof to this crazy story.  It's even been recorded as a medical case study because it was so unusual and the results so extraordinary.  On that note, if anyone needs a Rhuematologist, for fuck's sake go to Sue Romanick in Bellevue.  She's the only doctor (of an excellent team of some of the best in the state) that could find a clever way to get through this and she's bloody brilliant. I have been a very lucky girl, in my assignment of doctors and my fortune in friends.

While things are not done for us, I believe we are through the worst.  I had to stop working entirely, but am getting some disability benefits while I'm stabilizing and, hopefully, I can make use of this time to return to school in the fall.  Ben got a surprise bonus that allowed us to pay off a good chunk of all that debt, and I think it signaled for us that we're ready to take it on our own.  At this point, it would feel wrong to take further aid.

If anyone should want to help further, or if Jules would like to continue her chic line of charity jewelry, I would direct those good intentions towards the Lupus Foundation of America (http://www.lupus.org/), because Lupus is unbelievably insane and not nearly as rare as it should be, or to your favorite hospital's charity care for patients without insurance or in dire financial straits (the hospital that has seen me through EVERYTHING was Overlake, and their charity list is: http://www.overlakehospital.org/foundation.aspx?id=1320).  Really, I'm all for charities - especially those that help regular people, and those strongly focused on super-serious scientific medical research.

So, again and again, thank you, thank you!
You all made this possible for Lori and those closest to her. Thank you all for your generous support and spreading the love with the bracelets. I owe you all a big hug.

On the note of supporting Lupus research, another friend of mine is currently in a similar battle. She published a book, and the proceeds go to her bills and to the Lupus Foundation! It is a good read and a good cause.

Soon to Hit Etsy

I made a few new pieces over the weekend so I am showing them off here before I put them into my store. Keep in mind these are Crapcam pics and better ones will be available later!

First up is this short necklace. Butterfly pendant hanging from 19g brass chain with amber Swarovski crystal accents. Sold!

Next is a pendant and earring set. The chain and earrings are made of 19g brass chain and nickel silver rings plus more amber crystals to compliment the large costume pendant. Asking Price: $75 (full set)

If you are interested in either before they hit Etsy, send me an email at jules@knittedsteel.net. With NorwesCon quickly approaching, now is the time to snag those last minute touches to your kit!

A quick note

I've been having an oh-so-lovely time lately with bots leaving comments on old posts. They are off-topic, badly coded, and clearly do not have a grasp on the English language. I am not interested in cheap viagara, meth ingredients or financial blogs with bad advice thank you very much.

To cut down on the spam, I updated some comments settings here. From now on you will have to do one of those word verification thingies with the wonky letters before your comment is posted. It's an extra step for you guys and a little annoying, I know. But it should prevent spam from hitting my recent posts.

Along with that I am starting limited moderation. If you make a comment on a blog post that is over 2 weeks old, I will have to accept it before it appears. Most of the spam so far has shown up on my older posts, so again this should help cut the crap. If you see something from an old post that you're interested in, send me an email instead.

On a more maille-related note, please get your lanyard order in by Feb. 10th if you want it for PAX East!

I imagine spam bots to look like the guy in the pic above.

Pirate Bands - Custom Bracelets for $10

Pirate bands are simple, stretchy, durable, one-size, and customized for you. Just like my lanyards, you get to choose the colors! Vibrant anodized aluminum and EPDM rubber make a simple, quick, fun statement on your wrist. Lots of people have bought these in school colors, favorite combos, and to match bright hair dyes! Ordering is easy and shipping (if necessary) is fast.

Step One: Choose the aluminum color.
Unlike the lanyards, this is a little more specific. Select one color from these options for the aluminum rings:

Step Two: Choose one rubber color.
These colors start slightly dull as they are covered in a powdery coat during production. As that wears off (quickly) the rings will have a much more vibrant hue and come very close to matching the aluminum colors. Select one from the following:
NOTE: BLACK RINGS (NOT PICTURED) ARE ALSO AN OPTION FOR THE SAME COST.

Step Three: Contact me!
Please email me at jules@knittedsteel.net with the following information:
-- Name & Shipping Address
-- Your color choices (please specify metal/rubber!) and quantity
-- Any other questions or requests
-- Payment option (PayPal or cash [locals only])

I will respond with your total cost +$1 for shipping and estimated time. Most often I will have all colors on hand, but if I have to order more your bracelet may be delayed 2+ weeks and I will let you know immediately.

Cheers!

Order a Custom Lanyard for PAX: East

***PAX: East orders are closed! PAX: Prime orders are now open.***

Do you want to look as awesome as this guy? I bet you do. It's easy! With that shining sexy lanyard showing off your 3-day pass to the glorious Boston PAX (or any other weekend of happiness you choose to attend), you can look awesome too.

These lanyards are not exclusive to PAX East!

Cheers, Happy 2010 and see you at PAX!
